Will my child benefit from physical therapy?
Physical therapy is appropriate for any child in need of improvement with strength, balance, coordination, range of motion, quality of movement, eye-hand coordination, attention to task and sensory integration. For children who face physical challenges, long-term disabilities or injuries, physical therapy offers an opportunity for life-changing progress.
The goal of physical therapy is to help children reach their full developmental potential to improve their quality of life. The way this is achieved is by incorporating positive approaches and age-appropriate activities and techniques that are most suited to each individual child.
What's next?
Initial VisitOnce it is determined that your child is an appropriate candidate for physical therapy we will schedule an evaluation which usually takes approximately 60 - 90 minutes. It is an opportunity to learn about your child and what is most important to accomplish during therapy. I will ask for a basic health history and any other pertinent information to be provided by a parent.
Next, I will evaluate your child's complete musculoskeletal system and overall gross motor skills. I will examine the quality of the child's movements, their balance and coordination. This will help me to identify what impairments need to be addressed, and to design a program specific to your child's needs. Based on the evaluation, I will make a recommendation on frequency and duration of treatment, and together we will come up with a schedule that will work best for your family. Questions and concerns should be freely expressed during this time, as well as throughout treatment sessions. Parent input is an integral part of therapy! If it is determined that I am not able to meet your needs, I will refer you to another professional or organization that can. |
Treatment SessionsIn each session, I incorporate a variety of treatment interventions that are most appropriate to address the child’s needs, including stretching, massage, mobilization, strengthening and endurance training all to enhance the child's capabilities and prevent musculoskeletal deformities
The goal is for the child to build strength and improve motor function, balance and coordination in fun, creative ways. In fact, most of the work done is based in play... it’s the most positive way to get children motivated and involved. Therapy sessions can be done inside the home or taken outside to the park or even the beach. The possibilities are endless. Treatment can be provided in the following areas: Gross Motor Development Motor Learning Torticollis Remediation Range of Motion Strength Muscle Tone Posture/Postural Control Body Alignment Pre-gait/Gait Training Wheelchair Positioning Adaptive Equipment |
